Yang Xian, revered as the 'Father of Folk Songs,' just took the stage at the Taipei Dome on November 22 to participate in the 'Folk Song Reunion' concert. Less than a month later, shocking news broke that he passed away suddenly on the 13th at the age of 75. His family has already handled his funeral affairs, and Yin Zhengyang, chairman of the Chinese Musicians' Exchange Association, will also discuss with members to see what assistance they can offer. Multiple folk singers have also posted tributes in his memory.
Yang Xian was born in Hualien and attended National Taiwan University for both his undergraduate and graduate studies. On June 6, 1975, he held a 'Contemporary Folk Song Creation Concert' at Taipei Zhongshan Hall, which marked the beginning of the folk song movement. He was known for composing music by 'setting poetry to song,' and once turned Yu Guangzhong's poem 'Four Rhymes of Nostalgia' into a song. This February, after nearly 50 years away from releasing albums, Yang Xian finally launched his new album 'Homeland · Journey · Poetry · Song,' which has become his final work.
