Hong Kong’s famed producer Shih Nan Sun passed away on July 13 at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital due to multiple organ failure triggered by a bacterial infection, at the age of 75. Her memorial service, titled “Encore Nansun”, was held on the 2nd, allowing friends, family, and members of the film industry to bid their final farewells.
The memorial site was arranged in a simple manner, with fresh flowers surrounding a black-and-white photograph of Shih Nan Sun wearing a gentle smile. On the large screen, the words “Encore Nansun” were displayed, echoing the life she led: ‘Forever Cherished Legend Lives On’.
Shih Nan Sun’s ex-husband, Tsui Hark, and her close friend of over 40 years, veteran actress Brigitte Lin, spoke to the press together after the memorial. Lin described Shih as a remarkable figure in cinema, saying that neither her character nor her contributions to Hong Kong film could be fully captured in a single book. Lin further praised Shih’s wholehearted devotion to her friends, adding, “In her final days, her family and friends were by her side every day. Tsui Hark and I took turns, 24 hours a day, to keep her company. In the end, she left us peacefully, surrounded by love.” Lin said that, like Tsui Hark, she would always be Shih’s “family forever.” She expressed special gratitude and emotion for the many friends who had come from all over the world to pay tribute.
