(Kuching, 23rd) A man, out of jealousy after suspecting his ex-wife was involved with someone else, stabbed her with a knife and now faces the consequences, having been sentenced to 7 years in prison today.
54-year-old Morni Utek, from Kota Samarahan, pleaded guilty in the Sessions Court to a charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison, or fined, or whipped, or any combination of these penalties.
He was charged with intentionally injuring his 46-year-old ex-wife with a knife at around 12:25 am on the 17th of this month, at a house on Jalan Kampung Tabuan Hilir.
Case details revealed that it was their daughter who made the report, after finding her mother had injuries to her arm following an argument with her father (the accused).
Subsequently, the reporter took her mother to the hospital for treatment and reported the incident to the police for further action.
The police arrested the accused at around 5:40 pm on the same afternoon.
Investigations showed that the accused and the victim had been divorced for two years.
It is understood that the couple has eight children, of which five are under the care of the accused.
On the day of the incident, the accused stabbed the victim with a kitchen knife in front of her home.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
