(Bandar Seri Begawan, 7th) The inaugural International Conference on Community Service and Community Empowerment is of exceptional significance, as it provides a platform for everyone to discuss increasingly pressing and challenging issues facing today's world—issues that affect culture, mindset, and community cohesion.
Indeed, a strong community does not rely solely on economic development but originates from love, care, and the spirit of mutual assistance.
This is precisely the essence of community service, which is a noble value capable of shaping individuals and promoting the well-being of a nation.
Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Chairman of the Sultan Foundation Council, Prince Malik, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Community Service and Empowerment, held at the Islamic Treasures Museum.

Prince Malik stated that community service is not merely a part-time activity, but rather a way of life that cultivates people’s sense of responsibility towards their fellow citizens.
He pointed out that mutual assistance among neighbors, youth actively participating in charitable activities, and enterprises giving back to local communities—all exemplify the power of community.
He noted that at the recently held Hari Raya celebration, His Majesty the Sultan also emphasized the values of “good deeds” (Pemedulian) and “care” (Prihatin). In his speech, His Majesty said: “The human values of good deeds and care have been deeply ingrained in the people of Brunei, becoming a treasured legacy passed down from generation to generation by our ancestors.”
He stressed that this aligns with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad: “The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.”
“His Majesty’s Government has highlighted the importance of care and concern through the 'Social Blueprint' because it promotes unity, cultivates empathy and leadership in youth, and builds a resilient community capable of facing challenges.”
“However, relying solely on community service is not enough; we also need community empowerment. The two complement each other.”

“Empowerment refers to providing communities with training, skills, leadership opportunities, and space to participate in local development planning. An empowered community will become more independent and self-reliant, no longer totally dependent on others.”
Prince Malik subsequently called for integrating community service into daily life so that the spirit of mutual aid can be passed down and further promoted by future generations.
“On this occasion, I would like to congratulate Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University and the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation and thank them for their efforts in facilitating this grand event.”
He believes that this conference will serve as a remarkable platform for all parties to exchange ideas and experiences, strengthen cooperative networks, and thus promote the community service agenda at both the national and international levels.
