(Miri, 25th) Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim, stated that visiting war memorials can help you understand the history of conflict and commemorate those who have served.

He said that over the years, visiting war memorials has become an important tourism activity. In Malaysia, there are many war memorials established to honor those who fought for our freedom. These memorials are now frequented by many visitors, with many veterans and their families attending ceremonies related to the memorials, making them important tourist attractions.

Abdul Karim made these remarks during the launch of the 80th anniversary commemoration of the 1945 Semut Parachute Operation held in Bario.

He pointed out that since 2013, this event has been held annually as a small gathering for veterans, Semut operation agent families, and local heroes who assisted the Z Special Unit, and this community commemoration event has now become an international event.

“This special event is one of a series of community and international events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Pacific liberation during World War II. As Sarawak's first community event, it has attracted international attention with high commissioners from Australia and New Zealand, as well as the deputy high commissioner from the UK, veterans, journalists, researchers, and tourists attending this event.”

He also stated that the Sarawak government recognizes the importance of this event and plans to hold a reenactment of the 1945 Bario Semut Parachute Operation in Kuching on the 27th of this month.

“We collectively commemorate the heroism and bravery shown by British, Australian, New Zealand soldiers, and local heroes in the fight for freedom, which ultimately led to Sarawak's liberation from Japanese occupation during World War II.”

He expressed his delight in seeing Bario Memorial Park become an important site for guests visiting. The event highlights the importance of Bario Memorial Park as a place to pay respects and remember those who served.

Additionally, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Gerawat Gala, said in his speech that the Sarawak government has always supported the preservation of heritage sites as part of our heritage and tourism industry development. We appreciate the Miri City Council and RKS for co-hosting this annual event. I hope the City Council can help maintain this memorial site and upgrade or improve it by expanding the area and enhancing the landscape for recreation of the local community and tourists.

He revealed that so far, I have allocated a total of RM 120,000 for the restoration of the memorial and the upgrade of the area, including the fencing around the memorial.
