Chinese drama goddess Zhao Lusi has once again become the focus of public attention. In addition to collaborating with William Chan on the new drama Shining For You, where she challenges herself with her first 'scheming woman' role and breaks away from her usual pure image, her previously starring series Hidden Love has also stirred controversy after being adapted into a web short drama titled Hidden Love: Promise You.
In the upcoming drama Shining For You, Zhao Lusi and William Chan form a brand-new on-screen couple, portraying a glamorous marriage scam. The series reveals unforgettable childhood traumas beneath the surface of a dazzling life. Zhao Lusi's character must fabricate her background and face multiple trials, showcasing a nuanced inner world. After the trailer was released, fans sparked heated discussions, and viewers are full of anticipation for her bold new role.
Meanwhile, the popular drama Hidden Love, starring Zhao Lusi, has once again become a major topic of interest. The web short drama Hidden Love: Promise You has sparked a copyright controversy. The new short drama almost completely replicates the original in plot and character setup, only replacing the cast.
The core of the dispute is that this web short drama was filmed without authorization from the original novel's copyright holders or author, who explicitly stated that they did not authorize any web short drama adaptation. However, the production company asserts that the original contract's clause covering 'live-action adaptation' already includes web dramas, and thus claims there is no infringement. These differences led to uncertainty as to whether the web short drama would be released on schedule the day before its launch.
The trailer for the short drama has drawn wide discussion among fans, featuring dialogue almost identical to the original—such as, 'I have a friend who likes her brother’s friend Duan Jiaxu'—and continuing emotional lines like, 'I used to just not dare to tell him I liked him. Now, I don’t even dare to like him anymore.' Many viewers are questioning whether such a high degree of similarity constitutes infringement.
