Suspected of concealing 700 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes in a modified lorry floor compartment, a 31-year-old Malaysian male driver was arrested at Tuas Checkpoint while attempting to enter Singapore.
According to a report by Lianhe Zaobao, Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) posted on Facebook on the 27th that an image analyst stationed at Tuas Checkpoint detected abnormalities in the cargo, which was declared as cable reels, bolts, and nuts, during a routine scan of a Malaysia-registered lorry. Officers then conducted a further inspection of the lorry and uncovered more than 700 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in the modified floor compartment.
The ICA added that the 31-year-old Malaysian male driver involved in the case was arrested, and both he and the related evidence have been handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigation.
The ICA emphasized that while promoting trade and clearance convenience, it will spare no effort to safeguard Singapore’s border security.
