Jensen Huang: China Will Ultimately Open Its Market to US AI Chips

Jensen Huang, CEO of US artificial intelligence (AI) giant Nvidia, predicts that Chinese authorities will eventually allow American artificial intelligence chips to enter China.

During an interview at Dell Technologies’ annual global technology summit in Las Vegas on Monday, Huang said, "The Chinese government has to decide how much it wants to protect its domestic market. My sense is that, over time, the Chinese market will ultimately open."

Huang joined the US business delegation on President Trump's visit to China at the last minute last week for an important meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Huang revealed that he did not directly discuss plans to sell the company's H200 AI chips to Chinese customers with Chinese officials, but acknowledged that both sides did mention the topic in their talks. “President Trump and the Chinese leaders communicated, and I look forward to their decision.”

After returning to Washington last Friday, Trump said that Nvidia’s H200 chip “was indeed brought up, and I think there may be progress,” but did not elaborate further. He added that China has not yet approved the purchase of H200 chips, “because they choose not to do so, they want to develop their own.”

Last December, Trump allowed Nvidia to sell H200 AI chips to Chinese customers, indicating a partial relaxation of US measures to restrict China's AI development. Afterwards, the US Department of Commerce also issued export licenses permitting Nvidia AI chips to be exported to China. However, under Beijing’s guidance, Chinese companies canceled their purchases to support domestic manufacturers, including Huawei, in independently developing chips.
