Japanese Girl Group XG to Perform in Hong Kong on July 31 – Some Netizens Draw Association to 'Unit 731'

The Japanese girl group 'XG' was originally scheduled to hold a concert in Hong Kong on July 31, but calls to change the date have emerged on Chinese internet. This is because some netizens believe that 'July 31' could easily remind people of the Japanese military's 'Unit 731.'

'Unit 731' refers to the Japanese military unit during World War II that carried out biological warfare and human experimentation in China. The topic has long been a highly sensitive historical issue in Chinese society.

Concert Date Changed to August 2

On the 8th, XG announced on its official platform that the Hong Kong concert date has been changed to August 2, with the venue remaining at Hall 10 of the AsiaWorld-Expo. The official XG Weibo post read: 'The Hong Kong performance date has been adjusted to Sunday, August 2, 2026. All other performance and ticketing information remain unchanged. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.'

XG's Hong Kong concert tickets are available in six categories, ranging from HKD 699 for the most affordable to HKD 2199 for the most expensive. Tickets will go on sale next week.

According to a report by Japan's Kyodo News, after XG announced the tour date for the Hong Kong stop on the 6th, discussions immediately surfaced on Weibo. Some netizens criticized the choice of date as 'tactless,' arguing that using numbers related to '731' in Chinese-speaking regions can easily hit a historically sensitive nerve. However, many netizens also believed that the outside world is over-interpreting the issue. Some comments in the relevant Hong Kong media reports pointed out that 'July 31 is just an ordinary date' and that people shouldn't read too much into it.
