Extreme Heavy Rain in Xixia, Henan Causes 2 Deaths and 6 Missing

Xixia County, Nanyang City, Henan Province, China has experienced extreme heavy rainfall, causing the downstream Shewei River to surge dramatically. Official data shows that so far, 2 people have died and 6 are missing. The local Laojieling Scenic Area has also announced a temporary closure starting from the 1st due to damage to some facilities caused by the heavy rain.

According to comprehensive reports from CCTV News and Xinhua News Agency, Taiping Town and Erlangping Town in Xixia County were hit by short-term extreme heavy rain from 9:00 p.m. on the 30th to midnight the next day, with rainfall reaching 208.3 millimeters and a total cumulative rainfall of 225.3 millimeters. This caused the downstream Shewei River to rise rapidly, damaging some facilities and trapping residents.

The reports state that after the incident, Xixia County immediately organized rescue efforts. Two residents were rescued, but 2 people died and 6 remain missing. Currently, the rescued people are in stable condition. Rescue teams from Henan Province, Nanyang City, and Xixia County have mobilized all available emergency resources to search and rescue the missing.

According to Jimu News, the heavy rainfall also triggered a sudden mountain flood in the Laojieling Scenic Area, resulting in power outages and roads being washed away. On Tuesday, the scenic area announced on its WeChat official account that due to the impact of the heavy rain, some facilities have been damaged, and for the safety of visitors, the scenic area will be closed from July 1st, with reopening dates to be announced separately.
