Google Uses YouTube Videos to Train AI, Creators Displeased

US media reports that Google has used some YouTube videos to train artificial intelligence (AI) tools, causing some creators to be displeased and worry that AI-generated videos may become their biggest competitors.

The "Los Angeles Times" published a report on the 28th titled "Google Uses YouTube Videos To Train AI. These Creators Aren’t Happy," interviewing various YouTube channel creators and legal experts to discuss the impact of AI-generated videos on online creators.

The report noted that Google used YouTube videos as a database to develop various AI tools, including the text-to-video tool Veo. These videos come from content uploaded by regular creators, who receive no additional compensation and have no way to opt out from having their videos used.

YouTube is the largest video platform in the US, and paid creators and media over $70 billion in profit sharing from 2021 to 2023. However, Google's use of the platform's vast video library for AI development has led some creators to feel that their content is being exploited by the platform, raising concerns that they may be replaced by low-cost AI-generated videos in the future.

Some creators point out that currently, there is no way to refuse having their videos used for AI training, nor do they receive any additional revenue sharing; there have even been cases where deepfake videos impersonating creators have appeared, infringing upon their reputations and earnings.

YouTube stated that its cooperative relationship with creators has not changed, emphasized that AI tools can help make video production more efficient, and has already launched mechanisms for identifying and removing impersonated content. A spokesperson reiterated: "YouTube can only succeed when creators succeed."

Legal experts believe that creators may be able to argue in court that YouTube's terms do not explicitly cover AI training uses, which may lead to lawsuits in the future. (News source: Central News Agency)
