(Kuching, 16th) — The Sarawak government is strengthening human resource development by implementing the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) to meet the growing needs of the low-carbon industry.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari pointed out that in addition to infrastructure and energy resources, a highly skilled workforce is a crucial key to driving Sarawak’s economic transformation.

“What we need now are green processes, as well as resources that can support development. Therefore, the government has launched free higher education, in order to upskill, add new skills, and retrain the workforce.” He said this in his speech at the opening ceremony of the SWG Green Integrated Facility and Decarbonisation Hub.

He stated that this measure is extremely important to ensure that the people of Sarawak can participate in emerging industries arising from the global move towards a low-carbon economy.

He added that human resource development will become a key factor to ensure that Sarawak can fully seize new economic opportunities through green industry development and the application of low-carbon energy.

Abang Johari noted that as the global economy transforms, Sarawak must proactively nurture talent with the relevant skills in advance to support future industry needs.
