The Philippines’ House of Representatives on Wednesday impeached Vice President Sara Duterte on allegations of corruption and breach of public trust, reported German news agency (dpa).
A total of 215 members of the 306-seat house endorsed one of four impeachment complaints against Duterte, according to the secretary-general of the lower chamber of Congress.
The number was more than the one-third that was required for a complaint to be transmitted directly to the Senate for trial.
Once the complaint is forwarded to the Senate, the higher chamber will sit as an impeachment court, while members of the House of Representatives would be prosecutors.
The vice president, a daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, will remain in office while the trial is ongoing.
The impeachment complaints against the vice president were filed after she threatened to have President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the first lady and the house speaker assassinated if she herself were to be killed.
The threat came amid an investigation into the alleged misuse of 612.5 million pesos (US$10.4 million) worth of funds of the Department of Education.
Vice President Duterte resigned from her post as education secretary in Marcos' Cabinet in June, indicating a crack in the political alliance that propelled the duo to a clear victory in 2022.
