Sarawak Government Delays Disaster Relief Fund Distribution

(Miri, 3rd) The people of Sarawak experienced a severe flood during the New Year period, and it has been more than a month since. However, the affected families have yet to receive their due disaster relief fund.

Recently, at a special federal parliament committee meeting, the Federal Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Dato' Sri Nancy, clearly stated that the federal disaster relief funds have long been transferred to the Sarawak government account. So, what is the Sarawak government or its agencies waiting for?

Sarawak DAP Secretary Alan Ling lamented that at a time when people need help the most, the government's efficiency is disappointing. The funds are in place, yet the distribution of relief money has not commenced promptly—is it due to the negligence of officials, leading to the funds not reaching the victims?

He stated that the Sarawak government has been in power for decades, perhaps living too comfortably, and thus unable to genuinely prioritize the public sentiment. Even as the people struggle through the torment of floods and landslides, the government's attitude towards disaster management remains sluggish, making one question: is this really a government that prioritizes its citizens?

He frankly said that what is even more puzzling is that in the face of such a significant issue affecting people's lives, representatives of the ruling party have not voiced out about it. The officers of the People's Union Party, the people are waiting for relief funds and aid, yet you choose to remain silent? Such disregard for the suffering of disaster victims, is this your “commitment” to the people?

He added that the government's performance needs no further explanation, as the facts are evident. In the upcoming election, the people of Sarawak should use their votes to express dissatisfaction towards the rulers. Can a government that has long been in its comfort zone and is unresponsive to livelihood issues still put people first?

He also said that strong checks and balances are necessary to let the Sarawak government know that people's voices are not something they can ignore at will.
