On April 28, a reporter from Huashang Daily Dafeng News learned from the mother of the man involved in the ‘engagement rape case’ in Yanggao County, Datong City, Shanxi, that her son, Xi Moumou, will be released from prison on the morning of May 4. ‘I bought new clothes for my son. I’m preparing to personally pick him up and help him return to a normal life first.’
Xi Moumou’s mother stated that on April 27, she had already been notified by the prison that her son will be released on the morning of May 4. The prison plans to send Xi Moumou to the Yanggao County Bureau of Justice. In response, she said she’s in communication with the prison and plans to personally pick him up at the prison on May 4. ‘The moment he leaves prison, my son will no longer be a criminal. I want to take him home and help him return to normal life first.’
‘The journey is only about three hours. I hope that after he is released, he can put on the new clothes,’ said Xi Moumou’s mother.
It is understood that on May 1, 2023, Xi Moumou, 27, and a 24-year-old woman held an engagement banquet in Yanggao County. Both parties signed an ‘Engagement and Betrothal Gift Agreement’; the man’s side gave the woman half the betrothal gift that day—100,000 yuan (about 57,800 ringgit) and a 7.2-gram gold ring—promising that after a year of marriage, the woman’s name would be added to the property certificate of the wedding house, which is over 90 square meters.
On the afternoon of May 2, the two had sexual relations in the wedding house. Afterwards, the woman accused the man of rape.
On December 25, 2023, the Yanggao County court sentenced Xi Moumou to three years in prison for rape in the first trial. Xi Moumou was not convinced and appealed to Datong Intermediate Court.
On April 16, 2025, the second trial dismissed the criminal and civil appeals by Xi Moumou and his family, upholding the original judgment.
Regarding this, the presiding judge of the second trial at Datong Intermediate Court stated that the victim explicitly expressed opposition to premarital sex beforehand, exhibited obvious resistance during the incident, and had a strong reaction afterwards. This was sufficient to determine that Xi Moumou violated the victim's will and forcibly had sexual relations with her.
That same year, on May 14, the ‘Engagement Rape Case’ in Datong, Shanxi was included in the Supreme People’s Court’s database of guiding or typical cases.
On February 8, 2026, it was selected as one of the Top Ten Cases of 2025 Promoting the Process of Rule of Law in the New Era.
