Ever since Netflix drama series 'Squid Game' premiered its first season in 2021, it has sparked a global binge-watching craze. Now the much-anticipated third and final season is online, with the biggest highlight being how the surviving contestants use their last ounce of strength. In the final scene, after Lee Byung-hun arrives in Los Angeles, a game of Ddakji (slap match) is happening in the alley outside his car window. To viewers' shock and delight, Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett makes an appearance.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has repeatedly emphasized that 'Squid Game' will conclude with Season 3, but this does not mean the IP will end, as the world portrayed seems likely to continue through spin-off works with the audience. The director previously also stated: "There are indeed some ideas. During the three-year gap between seasons 1 and 2, we may explore the lives of 'Captain Park' (played by Oh Dal-su) or the masked men outside the games."
Moreover, early last year foreign media also reported that Netflix is preparing a US-set spin-off, 'Squid Game: America', and has approached director David Fincher, known for 'Fight Club' and 'House of Cards', to direct. However, Netflix has not confirmed this.
