Traveling at 225 km/h: Turkish Transport Minister Fined, Publicly Apologizes

Turkish Minister of Transport Uraloğlu recently shared a video online showing himself driving at a speed of up to 225 kilometers per hour on a highway—almost twice the legal speed limit. This not only led to ridicule on social media but also earned him a speeding ticket, for which he has now publicly apologized.

The video shows him driving on the highway, with folk music and a speech by President Erdoğan praising infrastructure development playing inside the car. The car's display panel shows the speed reaching as high as 225 kilometers per hour.

The maximum speed limit on Turkish highways is 140 kilometers per hour.

Traffic police stopped his car about 50 kilometers from the capital Ankara and issued Uraloğlu a speeding ticket with a fine of 9,267 lira (about 950 ringgit).

Uraloğlu's actions sparked a strong backlash online. On the 25th, he shared a photo of his speeding ticket on the social media platform X, writing: "Apologies to our citizens."

Official data shows that nearly 1.5 million traffic accidents occurred in Turkey last year, resulting in 6,351 deaths.
