(Bandar Seri Begawan, 9th) The Royal Brunei Police Force issued a statement regarding a video circulating recently on social media, which alleged that police failed to take action on a rape report involving a foreign woman. The police have provided clarification.
According to the statement, the case was thoroughly investigated. The investigation found that the existing facts and evidence were insufficient to support a rape charge, and that the nature of the case was more likely a personal dispute between the parties involved. The case was later submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers for review, and it was agreed that no further action would be taken.
Regarding the circulation of the related video, the police stated that a report has been received and the investigation is currently being conducted by the Women and Children Abuse and Violence Investigation Unit, with the assistance of the Cybercrime Investigation Unit (BSJS).
The investigation will be conducted under Section 34 of the Public Order Act (Chapter 148) and Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act (Chapter 24), as the matter may involve disruption of public order and dissemination of seditious content.
The police remind the public to be cautious when sharing information on social media, to avoid spreading false or unverified content so as not to affect public order or cause misunderstanding.
If the public needs to make a report, they can call the emergency hotline 993 or visit the nearest police station. You may also email info.rbpf@police.gov.bn
