On the 12th, US President Trump stated that the contents of the US-Iran agreement disclosed by Iranian official media are completely unrelated to what was actually agreed upon in writing by both parties, and he fiercely criticized Iranian authorities for a lack of integrity.
He posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, pointing out that the so-called agreement contents published by Iranian state media do not reflect the actual results of the negotiations between the two parties.
He said: “The terms leaked to the fake news media by Iran have absolutely nothing to do with the terms the two sides have agreed upon in writing. Everything they say, including that weak and pathetic statement claiming an agreement has been reached, has nothing to do with the facts.”
He further condemned the Iranian government’s negotiating stance, calling it “very disgraceful.”
Trump also issued a warning regarding the Iranian drone attack on an Indian vessel leaving the Strait of Hormuz, demanding that the Iranian government had better put its own house in order promptly.
Trump’s statements reflect a major gap in perception between the US and Iran regarding the contents of the agreement under negotiation, raising new doubts about whether a formal agreement can be reached quickly.
According to the content released earlier by Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, both sides are discussing a memorandum of understanding related to a ceasefire and subsequent arrangements, which covers sensitive topics including Iran’s nuclear program, management of the Strait of Hormuz, and economic sanctions. IRNA emphasized that Iran has not made significant concessions on several core issues.
Iranian media reported that the agreement does not require Iran to give up uranium enrichment activities, nor does it involve the destruction or removal of existing nuclear materials. The US and Iran have only agreed to launch a new round of nuclear negotiations within 60 days after signing the memorandum of understanding, to further discuss future arrangements regarding Iran's nuclear program.
IRNA stated that the US side has agreed to release some of Iran’s frozen assets after the agreement is signed, while the unfreezing of remaining funds, lifting of sanctions, as well as compensation for war losses, would be addressed in subsequent negotiations. However, this statement differs from the US position.
In addition to nuclear issues, control of the Strait of Hormuz has also become a major point of contention. Iranian media insist that Iran has never agreed to relinquish management rights over the Strait of Hormuz. The US side, however, says that keeping the Strait of Hormuz fully open is one of the key elements of the agreement.
