(Miri, 4th) – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari said that mutual respect for cultures and traditions is an important foundation for harmonious coexistence among Sarawak’s ethnic groups. Only by appreciating and accepting each other can society enjoy stable development.

He pointed out that the Borneo Cultural Carnival was initially held in Sarawak, then expanded to Sabah and Brunei, and now has reached an international level with participation from Indonesia and China. This demonstrates the continuous growth of the event, which is an encouraging achievement.

He made these remarks last night while addressing the opening ceremony of the “Borneo Cultural Carnival 4.0” hosted by the Sarawak Chinese Association at the outdoor parking lot of the Boulevard Shopping Mall.

He said that organizing such cultural events is not only to showcase the cultures and traditions of each ethnic group, but more importantly, to promote mutual understanding and respect, thereby strengthening unity between ethnic groups.

“If conflict arises due to racial issues, all parties will ultimately be affected. Therefore, we must cherish our existing harmony and jointly uphold a multicultural society.”

He said that people from all ethnic groups in Sarawak are able to share cultures, beliefs, and the fruits of development. This is a unique and pride-worthy way of life in the state.

In addition, he mentioned that the Miri City Council is promoting a Digital Command Center, which improves citizens' safety and quality of life by digitizing city operations. He praised the cooperation between the authorities and the public in jointly building a livable city.

In education, he said, starting this year the Sarawak government is providing free university education for eligible students in the state, covering 64 science-focused courses. This aims to cultivate more technological talents and propel the state toward high-tech development.

He said that Sarawak is actively developing advanced technology sectors, including aerospace, and plans to launch a satellite before 2030 in order to acquire data for the state’s development.

He pointed out that Sarawak has received international recognition and has been listed as a low-carbon emerging industrial cluster, a result made possible by the unity and joint efforts of all people.

He called on the younger generation to actively learn new technologies, seize development opportunities, and contribute to the future of Sarawak.
