Conflict Flares Up Again on Thai-Cambodian Border, Leaving 1 Dead and 3 Injured; Both Sides Accuse Each Other of Firing First

Another exchange of gunfire occurred on the Thai-Cambodian border on the 12th, resulting in 1 Cambodian dead and 3 wounded.

Sirikul, spokesperson for the Thai Prime Minister's Office, stated that the Thai government strongly condemns Cambodia for being the first to use weapons and open fire into Thai territory, especially in Ban Nong Ya Kaeo village, Khok Sung district of Sa Kaeo province. Such actions, he said, clearly infringe upon Thailand's sovereignty.

He pointed out that the Thai side responded cautiously and always adhered to the “rules of engagement,” seeking cover and firing warning shots. The conflict subsided after about 10 minutes, and there were no Thai casualties.

He said that Cambodia used civilians as human shields, which seriously violates international humanitarian law and runs counter to international laws protecting civilians in conflict. Thailand will never accept this.

Meanwhile, on the evening of the 12th, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet condemned on his official social media that Thai soldiers opened fire on innocent Cambodian civilians in Bai Cham village, Banteay Meanchey Province, resulting in 1 death and 3 injuries.

He noted that this incident is a severe violation of the spirit of humanitarianism and also contravenes the previous consensus between the two countries regarding a peaceful resolution of border issues.
