Trump Threatens on Social Media, US-Iran Switzerland Talks Off to a Rocky Start

The United States and Iran held talks in Switzerland on the 21st, but the Iranian representative left the venue, citing threats from US President Trump’s social media posts, and did not attend the press conference. On the first day of renewed US-Iran diplomatic negotiations, there was no progress.

While US and Iranian delegations were negotiating at Bürgenstock by Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, Trump once again posted on social media, demanding that Iran immediately stop the actions of its Lebanese proxies (referring to Hezbollah). He threatened: "If they don’t stop, we will strike Iran hard again. Just like last week, and even more intensely!"

Iran's parliamentary speaker and negotiation representative, Ghalibaf, stated on social media: "Haven’t they realized that if their threats really worked, they wouldn’t be in this predicament today? No matter what they say, we are the ones who actually take action."

US Diplomat Says US and Iran Expected to Negotiate ‘Through the Night’

However, a senior US diplomat involved in the negotiations told accompanying US media on the 22nd that the talks between the US and Iran at Bürgenstock in Switzerland were still ongoing, and the US delegation expected to work 'through the night.'

The diplomat stated that the Iranian negotiation representatives were still onsite, and US Vice President Vance and other US negotiators had been holding meetings and negotiations with the Iranian side. The US-Iran talks included “clarifying some confusing information from Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz and establishing conflict resolution mechanisms to ensure the strait remains fully open.” “We also discussed de-escalation mechanisms for the conflict in southern Lebanon and issues connected to enforcing the ceasefire agreement.”

On the 17th, the US and Iran each signed a memorandum of understanding, agreeing to negotiate and reach a final agreement within 60 days, ensuring passage through the Strait of Hormuz during that period. With Pakistan and Qatar coordinating, the two sides held diplomatic talks in Switzerland for the first time in decades. However, renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon has cast a shadow over the talks.
