Rob Reiner, the 78-year-old world-renowned director of “When Harry Met Sally,” and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered dead in their Los Angeles home on the afternoon of the 14th local time. Both appeared to have been stabbed and had their throats slit, with multiple knife wounds on their bodies.
The couple's 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been detained on suspicion of murder, and the latest reports indicate that he has been officially charged with two counts of murder. Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated that the maximum sentence for this case is life imprisonment without parole or even the death penalty.
At a press conference, Hochman said, “Cases involving family members are often among the most difficult and heartbreaking our office faces, because these crimes are typically highly private and especially brutal.” Prosecutors noted that the case involves special circumstances of multiple murders, qualifying it for the death penalty.
Nick was arrested late at night on the 14th and formally detained on murder charges on the morning of the 15th. He is currently being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles. He was scheduled to appear in court for the first time on the 16th but was unable to be transported from the facility due to failing a medical evaluation.
