(Bandar Seri Begawan, 16th) July 25 each year marks “World IVF Day,” which commemorates the birth of the world’s first baby conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) technology. This milestone transformed global fertility treatment and reproductive medicine development. In conjunction with this global observance, Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC), through its Reproductive Medicine Unit, organized the public forum “Hope Beyond the Horizon” to enhance public awareness regarding the availability, convenience, and technological advancements of IVF services in Brunei Darussalam.
The forum brought together the public, healthcare professionals, and invited guests, encouraging more open and rational discourse in society about infertility. Infertility is a medical condition affecting both men and women, and may significantly impact patients’ physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.

The event was held at the Sultan Foundation Hall and was officiated by JPMC Medical Services Director, Dr. Muhd Hiza Wardy bin Hj Abdul Halim.
As Brunei’s sole medical institution providing IVF services, JPMC emphasizes the importance of increasing public awareness of infertility, as well as the availability of local fertility treatment options. The forum also highlighted the need to reduce social stigma surrounding infertility, encourage patients to seek early consultation, and promote a multidisciplinary, patient-centered model of reproductive care.
Obstetrics, Gynecology and Fertility Specialist Consultant Dr. Chitra Karat stated in her welcome speech: “The journey of fertility treatment can be long and challenging, and it should not be faced by patients alone. This year’s forum also highlights our Sharia-compliant fertility services, ensuring that treatment options are both accessible and aligned with the values and beliefs of our community.”
The forum featured a multidisciplinary panel of experts, including Dr. Chitra Karat, reproductive embryologist Faridatul Asyiqin Jeffri, nutritionist Hoh Shair Li, and fertility counselor Dk Noor Afiqah Pg Kasmirhan.
This cross-professional collaborative model ensures that reproductive care is not limited to medical treatments, but also addresses physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors that may affect reproductive health.
