(Manila, 16th) The office of Philippine President Marcos stated today that despite recent rumors regarding Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro having held Maltese citizenship, Teodoro still enjoys the full trust and support of President Ferdinand Marcos.
Claire Castro, Deputy Secretary of the Presidential Communications Office and Presidential Palace News Director, emphasized at a press conference: “Secretary Teodoro continues to have the President's trust and confidence.”
Castro confirmed that the President has long been aware of Teodoro’s background of once holding dual citizenship, and all related matters have already been dealt with according to the law.
She stated: “The President knows about this because the relevant information is on record, including with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Commission on Appointments, both of which are aware of the matter.”
Previously, the Department of National Defense had clarified that before Teodoro re-entered public service in 2021, he had formally renounced his Maltese citizenship.
This move helps to dispel doubts about his qualifications from the public and ensures that Teodoro can continue to focus on defense affairs, assisting the President in advancing the development of national security and defense strategies.
