(Bandar Seri Begawan, 13th) The UBD Botanical Research Center (UBD BRC) demonstrates the university's commitment not only to promoting Brunei's remarkable natural heritage but also to sharing Brunei's natural wonders with everyone.
Hoo Swee Ying, Director of the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER), stated this at the launch ceremony of the educational tourism package held at the center yesterday.
He said that recognizing the need to expand our outreach and tailor our services to better serve and attract a broader audience, we closely cooperated with the Tourism Development Department of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
“With the valuable feedback from the Tourism Development Department and local travel agencies, our team has developed new immersive educational tourism packages aimed at providing visitors with an enhanced experience beyond traditional guided tours.”
“These activities are designed to provide visitors with hands-on experiences focused on plant diversity and sustainable horticultural practices and showcase the important research and conservation work being conducted at the center.”
He said that the launch ceremony symbolizes their commitment to positioning the UBD Botanical Research Center as an exciting destination attracting both local and international visitors.
He hopes that cooperation with the Tourism Development Department and local travel agencies will enhance Brunei's appeal, making Brunei known not only for its cultural heritage but also for its rich natural treasures and commitment to biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
This year marks the sixth anniversary of the establishment of the UBD Botanical Research Center, which now extends its influence to all visitors through the UBD Botanical Research Center Educational Tourism Package. It offers a unique educational experience showcasing the rich biodiversity of Brunei's flora and the rare Sunda heath forest.
It will also provide immersive educational tourism and activities highlighting the UBD Botanical Research Center's living plant and stingless bee collection, as well as the center's flagship conservation and research projects. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, Hajah Tutiaty, presided over the launch ceremony as the guest of honor.
Visitors to the UBD Botanical Research Center can choose the basic package, which includes the “Nature Tour: UBD Botanical Garden Tour,” an immersive guided tour led by local botanists and UBD graduates who are experts in Brunei's native plants.
The tourism packages offer hands-on activities, including the “Green Thumb Experience - Repotting and Transplanting,” “Grow Your Own - The Magic of Plant Propagation,” “Biodiversity Treasure Hunt,” and “Nature's Art - Leaf Printing.”
Nature enthusiasts can not only appreciate the green wonders of the UBD Botanical Research Center but also learn more about sustainable gardening practices and contribute to the center's conservation efforts.
