‘Letter to Grandma’ Breaks RM20 Million Box Office in Malaysia, Enters Top Ten Highest-Grossing Chinese Films in Malaysia

The Chinese tearjerker film ‘Letter to Grandma’ continues to surge at the Malaysian box office, officially surpassing RM20 million!

This remarkable box office result not only sets a new record in the overseas market but also manages to overtake ‘Shinjuku Incident’ starring Jackie Chan and Tony Leung Ka-fai, as well as ‘A Guilty Conscience’ starring Dayo Wong, Michael Hui, and Louise Wong. In the latest Malaysian cumulative box office ranking, it is now tied with Jackie Chan’s ‘CZ12’ at the 8th spot among the top ten highest-grossing Chinese-language films in Malaysia. It is now just a step away from surpassing ‘No More Bets’ and claiming the title of the highest-grossing live-action Chinese film in Malaysia.

The film's director Lan Hongchun recently led stars Li Sitong and Wang Yantong to Malaysia for a meet-and-greet event, interacting closely with local audiences. The response was enthusiastic, further boosting the film’s word of mouth and box office performance. Malaysia has become the strongest overseas box office market for ‘Letter to Grandma.’

To celebrate the film’s outstanding achievement in Malaysia, director Lan Hongchun and cast members Li Sitong and Wang Yantong specially recorded a thank-you video to express their gratitude to Malaysian audiences. The story centers on a grandmother who has waited decades for her husband who left for overseas and was never heard from again; her grandson, burdened by debt, goes to Thailand to look for his rumored wealthy grandfather, only to unexpectedly uncover a ‘Qiaopi’ story spanning over 70 years.
