Maldives President's First Visit to Malaysia: Examining Bilateral Relations and Deepening Cooperation

The President of Maldives, Muizzu, will be visiting Malaysia from today until the 30th to strengthen relations across various fields between the two countries.

Muizzu will be accompanied by Maldivian cabinet ministers, including Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel and senior officials, for this official visit, which marks his first visit to Malaysia since taking office on November 17, 2023.

According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, Muizzu will attend an official welcome ceremony at the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya tomorrow, followed by a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar.

The two leaders will review bilateral relations and explore further cooperation, especially in trade and investment, the halal industry, education, tourism, as well as youth and sports.

They will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

During this visit, the two leaders will witness the exchange of three Memoranda of Understanding, specifically in tourism cooperation, sports cooperation, and healthcare cooperation; additionally, they will witness the exchange of two notes on diplomatic training and the establishment of a bilateral consultation mechanism between Malaysia and the Maldives.

The Prime Minister will host a luncheon at the official residence for Muizzu.

According to the itinerary, Muizzu will be awarded an honorary doctorate in Islamic Leadership and Eminent Development at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) on Wednesday. The degree will be conferred by the Chancellor of IIUM, the Sultanah of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah.

Muizzu will then deliver a public lecture titled “Revival of Knowledge: Unveiling the Science and Modern Development of Islamic Civilization.”

In 2024, the total trade between our country and the Maldives will grow by 4.3% from the previous year's 827.3 million ringgit (180.9 million USD) to 862.7 million ringgit (189 million USD).

The Maldives is our sixth largest trading partner among South Asian countries.
