(Indonesia, 24th) The Indonesian Vice President has called on the public not to believe false information claiming that construction of the new capital Nusantara in East Kalimantan Province has stalled. The Vice President emphasized to all community groups that the government is upholding the President’s commitment to ensure that national development is no longer excessively concentrated on Java Island.
“For this reason, the construction of Nusantara will continue to move forward so as to enhance the fiscal capacity of other regions and achieve stronger economic growth.” As the eldest son of Indonesia’s seventh President Joko Widodo, Vice President Gibran specifically noted that he personally inspected Nusantara a month ago and confirmed that the construction is proceeding as planned.
He further explained: “I reiterate that the construction of the new capital IKN will definitely continue and be successfully completed. When I inspected a month ago, the project was progressing smoothly and comprehensively; currently, only the buildings for judicial and legislative institutions remain to be completed.” In May 2025, Gibran has already confirmed that the new capital construction in North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara regions of East Kalimantan Province is highly consistent with the vision of building the new capital.
This massive infrastructure project, initiated by former President Jokowi, has consistently faced challenges of funding pressure and construction delays. Indonesians are also divided on the idea of relocating the capital to a remote area.
