Renowned director Wong Jing recently talked at length about entertainment industry secrets on a YouTube program, generously sharing old anecdotes of working with numerous superstars. Lately, Wong Jing has once again made revelations, exposing the three main reasons behind superstar Leslie Cheung’s suicide!
Wong Jing pointed out that Leslie Cheung originally started at RTV (now ATV) and was not very famous in the beginning; he only got second place in the Asian Singing Contest: “Afterwards, he joined TVB, and the song 'Monica' made him an overnight hit. TVB was so powerful at the time that it could promote artists to every corner of Hong Kong, and just with this one song, he was propelled to stardom.”
Wong Jing continued, saying that although Leslie’s songs were very popular, his acting was just average, so in 'A Better Tomorrow,' “Whenever Chow Yun-fat came on stage, the audience would applaud; when Leslie Cheung appeared, they would boo him.” Wong Jing said that Leslie truly became a megastar only after his first retirement and successful comeback with 'He's a Woman, She's a Man'. At that time, his singing and acting skills had greatly improved and he was genuinely worshipped throughout Hong Kong.
Then Wong Jing began to disclose how Leslie Cheung ended up taking his own life, starting with his battle with depression: “I’ve known for a long time that he suffered from depression.” Wong Jing also stated that Leslie’s doctor at that time didn’t seem to use the most suitable treatment: “The doctor didn’t take any compulsory measures, just prescribed him medication, and it seems as if Leslie didn’t always take the medicine as instructed.”
The thing that most disappointed Leslie Cheung, according to Wong Jing, was the shattering of his dream to become a director: “It seemed that just before he started having problems, a wealthy big shot in China had promised to support him in directing a major film. He had talked to all the actors he wanted and preparations were well underway; they were almost ready to start filming. But suddenly, this big shot had an accident and was sent to jail. Leslie was very disappointed and didn’t know how to explain to the people he’d approached. This is what I heard: he was in a very bad emotional state, and not long after, the tragedy happened.”
