(Italy, 26th) — A boat carrying 51 migrants recently sank in the Mediterranean Sea, with only one person confirmed to have survived and the other 50 missing.
According to Italy's ANSA news agency, the sole survivor was rescued by a merchant ship and taken to Malta for treatment. The survivor stated that they departed from Libya on the 22nd, and the boat capsized and sank rapidly at sea the following day. The survivor clung to debris, floating at sea and holding on until being rescued.
After the incident, relevant authorities immediately launched a search and rescue operation, covering waters near the island of Lampedusa. So far, no other missing persons have been found.
According to the latest data from the Missing Migrants Project of the International Organization for Migration, over 1,000 migrants and refugees have died on the "Central Mediterranean route" (from Libya to Italy) in 2025 so far.
