A three-year-old boy in Jiangsu, China suffered severe burns to his hands and feet when a Xiaomi smartphone unexpectedly exploded while he was using it, leaving parts of his skin blackened.
According to Huashang Daily, footage of the incident was uploaded to social media by a netizen from Jiangsu on the 7th of this month. The video shows the child using a Xiaomi 13 model phone when the device suddenly explodes. The person involved stressed that the phone had never been repaired or modified since purchase.
The video uploader stated that the child’s left hand and lower limbs were seriously injured, with some skin showing blackening, blisters, and peeling. He immediately contacted Xiaomi’s official customer service. Xiaomi responded by saying they would retrieve the exploded parts and send them to the R&D center for inspection to determine the cause.
The incident quickly sparked heated discussions online. Many users of the same phone model expressed concern, saying they “never thought a phone used in daily life would explode,” and hoped Xiaomi would announce the inspection results soon. However, some voices reminded others to view the incident rationally, and that whether it involves a product quality issue needs to be confirmed by authoritative institutions.
Technical experts noted that phone explosions could be related to battery defects, circuitry issues, external impacts, or high temperature environments. The specific cause can only be clarified through professional testing. According to China’s Product Quality Law, if a product defect causes personal injury, the manufacturer must bear the corresponding responsibility.
On the 8th, a Xiaomi customer service representative told reporters that spontaneous combustion of phones is a low-probability incident with complex causes, and conclusions cannot be drawn based solely on the phenomenon. As of yet, no official statement regarding the explosion has been released by Xiaomi.
