Colombian President Petro announced on the 3rd that, in reciprocity, Colombia would recall its ambassador to the United States for consultations.

He posted on social media: “As a response to the recall of the U.S. Embassy in Colombia’s Chargé d’Affaires McNamara for consultations, I am recalling Colombia’s Ambassador to the U.S., Peñia, for consultations.”

Petro reiterated that Colombia remains committed to advancing the bilateral agenda with the United States. After being recalled, Peñia will report on the progress of the bilateral agenda between Colombia and the United States.

He also outlined seven core points that the Colombian government hopes to promote jointly with the U.S., mainly including economic decarbonization and energy transition, ecosystem restoration, combating transnational drug crime, and a humanitarian migration treaty.

Earlier in the day, the U.S. State Department issued a statement saying that Secretary of State Rubio had recalled the U.S. Embassy in Colombia’s Chargé d’Affaires McNamara urgently to Washington, D.C. for consultations. In addition, the U.S. side is “taking other measures to clearly express deep concern over the current state of U.S.-Colombia bilateral relations.”
