Legendary Hong Kong actress Grace Chang (real name: Zhang Yufang), known as the ‘Mambo Girl,’ passed away peacefully on the 3rd at the age of 93. After the news broke, many fans flocked to social media to pay tribute, lamenting that yet another iconic figure of the golden era of Chinese cinema has been lost.

Born in Nanjing in 1933, Chang moved to Hong Kong in 1949 and became active in the Chinese film industry during the 1950s and 1960s. With her outstanding singing, dancing, and acting talents, she was hailed as one of the most representative musical film stars in the history of Chinese cinema. In 1957, she starred in the film Mambo Girl, bringing Latin dance and pop music to the big screen. This sparked a mambo craze in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, earning her the nickname ‘Mambo Girl.’

Her 1960 film The Wild, Wild Rose is also considered one of her signature performances. In it, she portrayed a distinctive and charismatic nightclub singer, successfully creating a classic female character for Chinese cinema that still delights movie fans to this day. In addition, she also starred in many other popular films such as The Stars, The Moon and The Sun.

Besides shining in the Chinese film industry, Chang was also among the first Chinese actresses to break into the international stage. In 1954, she was invited to make a guest appearance in the Hollywood film Soldier of Fortune and became the first Chinese actress to perform on American television. Her classic song I Want Your Love was even featured in the 2018 Hollywood movie Crazy Rich Asians, once again introducing this legendary artist to audiences worldwide.

At the peak of her career, Chang gradually retired from showbiz after marrying businessman Ko Fook-chuen in 1964. When her son was born in 1966, she dedicated herself fully to being a wife and mother. Although she left show business, she did not abandon the arts, throwing herself into the study of Peking Opera and learning from masters of the Mei School, hoping to continue her passion for performing arts in new forms and thus begin another chapter of her life. #
