(Miri 9th) As global economic uncertainty intensifies and multiple countries successively adjust their tariff policies, impacting commodity prices and consumer market trends, Eric Tan , the Propaganda Secretary of the Pujut Branch of the Sarawak United People’s Party, calls on young people to enhance their sensitivity to economic trends and global tariff changes. They should also be more rational in consumption to avoid increasing their economic burden by blindly pursuing luxury goods.
Many young people may think that tariffs are a national-level matter and have nothing to do with them, but in fact, it affects what you spend every day." He said, when imported goods rise in price due to increased tariffs, the first to be affected are the general consumers, especially the youth group keen on purchasing imported brands, electronics, clothing, and luxury items. He pointed out that the consumption culture driven by social media in recent years has led many young people to develop a "must have" mentality, excessively pursuing brand-name products and high-consumption lifestyles, neglecting their economic capacity and future planning.
“We are not saying you can't enjoy life, but rather consume smartly. In today's world of rising global economic pressures, young people should think: where is the money spent most valuable?” He emphasized that blind consumption could lead to insufficient savings, financial strain, and even affect future plans such as starting a business or settling down. Chen Yihao also pointed out that smart consumption is not only a personal financial habit but also an important part of responding to global economic challenges. “When we know how to analyze economic trends, pay attention to price movements and tax policies, we have the ability to make more advantageous consumption and investment decisions.”
At the same time, he mentioned that the Sarawak government has actively introduced various youth-friendly policies in recent years, such as youth entrepreneurship grants, free higher education, and various skills training to help young people alleviate various living burdens. “The Sarawak government has been taking action and is willing to support youth development, but if youth themselves lack economic awareness, more assistance may just turn into short-term help without bringing long-term changes.”
Eric Tan urges young people to make good use of the resources and benefits provided by the Sarawak government while proactively learning about the impact of economic trends and tariff changes on their lives. They should follow financial news and policy changes, learn basic economic knowledge, practice prudent consumption, and savings management to build a solid foundation for life. “The future belongs to the prepared. If young people can build the correct consumption concepts and economic awareness at a young age, they will be more capable of seizing opportunities in a challenging world.”
