(Manila, 20th - Comprehensive Report) The Philippine Embassy in Italy has announced that the Philippines has reached consensus to be re-elected as an ad interim member of the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) Standing Committee for the term 2025 to 2027.
Ambassador and Philippine Permanent Representative Neil Dymond reiterated the Philippines’ firm support for IDLO’s mission of promoting effective judicial systems and building robust and lasting institutions as the foundation for sustainable development.
At the meeting, the Philippines expressed gratitude to IDLO, its donor countries and partners—especially the United States and the European Union—for significant progress made in expanding judicial services, modernizing legal frameworks, and strengthening the capacity of the judiciary. The Philippines also emphasized the need for greater burden and resource sharing to ensure IDLO continues to deliver results despite funding constraints.
Dymond pointed out that achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16—peace, justice, and inclusive institutions—remains a long-term endeavor. Conflicts and geopolitical tensions persist, and vulnerable groups, women, children, and indigenous communities continue to face barriers in accessing justice.
The Philippines again called on all countries to comply with the rules-based international order, including respecting the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and its dispute settlement mechanisms, and to realize fair and sustainable ocean governance. Dymond emphasized: "As a maritime nation, international law is particularly vital in the maritime domain. The rule of law is the core of Philippine democracy, guiding our pursuit of justice, equality, and responsible governance."
IDLO Director-General Jan Beagle, in her report at the General Assembly on the organization's 2025 achievements, challenges, and strategic priorities, noted that multilateralism is indispensable and that the rule of law plays a key role in reducing conflict, protecting human rights, combating corruption, and advancing sustainable development.
This election was held on December 12 at Italy’s National Economic and Labour Council (CNEL) in Rome, coinciding with the IDLO’s 2025 General Assembly. IDLO is an intergovernmental organization composed of 40 member parties and is managed by the Assembly, the Standing Committee, and the Audit and Finance Committee. The Philippines is a founding member of IDLO, officially joining in 1989, and obtained United Nations General Assembly observer status in 2022.
