(Bandar Seri Begawan, 25th) The Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS) under the Ministry of Finance and Economy will celebrate World Statistics Day (WSD) 2025 nationwide on October 20, with the theme “Advancing Towards Brunei Vision 2035 with Quality Statistics Data.”
As Brunei enters the final decade of realizing the “Brunei Vision 2035,” this theme highlights the urgent need for timely and reliable data to track progress, identify gaps, and guide policy adjustments.
Quality statistical data is crucial for accountability, measuring the impact of national initiatives, and making informed decisions, thereby achieving Brunei's goals of a “vibrant economy, a highly skilled population, and a high quality of life for all.”
In conjunction with World Statistics Day 2025, DEPS will organize a series of activities to promote a data-driven culture and raise public awareness of the role of statistics in evidence-based planning.
These activities will reach a wide audience from students to key stakeholder institutions, including a lecture titled “Advancing Towards Brunei Vision 2035 with Quality Statistics Data.”
The lecture will bring together participants from both government and non-government agencies, as well as panel experts from JPES, Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB), and the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS).
Discussions will cover key national statistics, insights into the economic blueprint, the role of administrative data in strengthening national statistics, and how data supports research and evidence-based decision-making.
Another activity is the statistical literacy program for secondary and higher education institutions, scheduled for October and November.
This program aims to deepen students' understanding of how statistical data supports everyday life, research, and national development. Through interactive sessions, the program seeks to cultivate a culture of data literacy among the younger generation, equipping them to use information and evidence-based approaches to tackle future challenges.
Through these celebrations, DEPS aims to highlight the crucial role of statistics in monitoring progress, setting benchmarks, and providing factual insights, thereby guiding effective strategy formulation and continuous improvement in areas such as health, education, business, and the economy.
