(Manila, 16th) The US government has stated its hope that following the collision between a Chinese naval vessel and a coast guard ship in the waters of Scarborough Shoal (Bajo de Masinloc), tensions in the South China Sea (referred to as the West Philippine Sea by the Philippines) will gradually ease, thus avoiding further escalatory actions.
While escorting a supply mission for fishermen, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel “Suluan” was pursued by a Chinese coast guard ship. During this period, on August 11, the Chinese coast guard vessel and a PLA naval ship accidentally collided.
In an interview, US Ambassador to the Philippines Carlson said: “We deeply regret the collision incident, but also hope it can serve as a turning point, leading to a de-escalation of aggressive actions in the South China Sea.”
The day after the incident, the US immediately deployed two warships to carry out “freedom of navigation operations” (FONOPs), demonstrating its stance on upholding international law in the Indo-Pacific region.
Carlson emphasized that this operation is a long-established mechanism for the US military: “The US Navy and armed forces have repeatedly made it clear that we will fly, sail, and operate anywhere permitted under international law.”
She also praised the professionalism demonstrated by the Philippine Coast Guard after the incident, even proactively offering assistance to the distressed Chinese coast guard vessel.
“The Philippine Coast Guard has consistently exhibited professionalism on the high seas and in waters where it holds jurisdiction and sovereign rights. Unfortunately, however, illegal, coercive, and aggressive actions by the Chinese side continue,” she said.
