(Bandar Seri Begawan, 29th) Brunei Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy, Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, along with the delegation, recently attended Brunei's 10th Board of Governors Annual Meeting in Beijing.
This year's annual meeting, themed "Synergistic Development, Cooperative Prosperity", saw AIIB member countries review the ten-year development journey since the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank's establishment in 2016, and used this opportunity to collectively look back on AIIB’s development course.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony, emphasizing the development trajectory of the AIIB and its strong investment in member country projects. Premier Li also laid out three hopes for AIIB’s future development: first, to support the development capabilities of AIIB member countries more forcefully by providing high-quality and low-cost financing; second, to adhere to open regionalism, advance connectivity, and deepen synergy with the Belt and Road Initiative; third, to leverage AIIB’s role as a new multilateral platform. AIIB President Jin Liqun, in his speech, reviewed the achievements, measures, and policy directions AIIB has made in promoting regional infrastructure development and responding to the impact of global challenges over the past decade, and highlighted the importance of cross-border connectivity, green financing, mobilization of private capital, digital transformation, and strategic cooperation.
During the roundtable meeting, the Governors provided guidance on the future direction of AIIB, including promoting infrastructure development and connectivity.
Brunei Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy, Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, agreed and believed that AIIB could promote greater cooperation in addressing climate change mitigation by incorporating disaster mitigation measures in regional infrastructure construction, investing in early warning systems, promoting nature-based solutions, and developing innovative adaptation financing. Brunei Darussalam also encouraged AIIB to provide better financing channels for small countries through strategic partnerships.
During the meeting, Zou Jiayi was elected as the new President of the AIIB, succeeding President Jin Liqun, whose term will end in January 2026. The 11th AIIB Annual Meeting will be held in Doha, Qatar, in September 2026.
During this period, Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah held a joint meeting with AIIB President Jin Liqun, focusing on exploring closer cooperation between Brunei and AIIB in areas of mutual interest.
As a multilateral development bank, the AIIB aims to promote the economic and social development of the Asian region through infrastructure investments, particularly in transportation, energy, water resources, and communications. The AIIB Annual Meeting is held once a year, bringing together governors from 110 member countries (including Brunei).
