Anita Mui’s Shocking Ordeal: Hunted, Beaten, and Held by the Triads - Charles Heung’s Wife Says 'She Was the Fiercest Woman'

Charles Heung’s wife, Mrs. Heung (Chen Lan), recently shared bits of her life on Douyin, unexpectedly revisiting the late diva Anita Mui’s harrowing encounters with Hong Kong’s criminal underworld. The revelations have stirred a wave of nostalgia. Mrs. Heung revealed that at the peak of her career, Anita Mui had two direct confrontations with gangsters and was nearly targeted with a bounty on her head.

The first incident occurred after Anita Mui was out dining with friends. She and Mrs. Heung headed to a Japanese restaurant, unwittingly entering a venue reserved by prominent Sun Yee On boss Wong Chun. Intoxicated, Anita not only fumbled a toast, dropping her glass into the boss’s noodle bowl, but directly challenged him, asking, “Where are you from?” The situation became tense, even sparking rumors that Wong Chun threatened, “A million for two lives.” Fortunately, Mrs. Heung intervened and arranged a peacemaking banquet, resolving the conflict. Wong Chun later even remarked, “Anita Mui is the fiercest woman I’ve ever met.”

But the dangers didn’t end there. In 1992, Anita Mui sought Mrs. Heung’s help again, claiming she’d been beaten and even held captive by a big boss of the Green Gang, all because she refused to shake his hand. Although peace was eventually brokered thanks to Mrs. Heung’s mediation, the gang boss’s henchmen, angered by their leader’s “humiliation,” once nearly loaded their guns to threaten her, but were stopped just in time.
