Sneak Peek at Lunar New Year Films for the Year of the Snake

Watching Lunar New Year films can be said to be a traditional New Year activity for Malaysians. In the past, the New Year's film lineup was almost always led by Hong Kong films. Every year, Malaysia produces at least 2 to 3 New Year films. In 2025, the number of productions hits a new high with a total of 8 films, almost each featuring actors from Hong Kong and Singapore. The line-up includes:
“Half a Catty Eight Taels” featuring Best Actor Eric Tsang, TV King Bobby Au-yeung, and Dickson Wong;
“OMG! Mom is Pregnant” with Best Actress Anita Yuen;
“Hahaha New Year’s Comedy” starring TV Queen Jessica Hsuan, Philip Keung, Sam Lee, DaDa Chan, and Kwok-fai Lam;
“Be Somebody with Riches” with Louis Cheung, veteran actor Richard Ng, Hubert Wu, and Angus Yeung;
“New Year. Miracle” featuring Singapore's Best Actress Xiang Yun, Zhou Chongqing;
“Mind Your Coffee Shop” with Singapore’s comedy king Mark Lee;
and “Guardians” featuring Zhu Mimi developed in Hong Kong, promising ample attractions.

Synopsis: Based on director Lee Yiu-cheung’s 2009 stage play of the same name “Grandma Dudu is Missing,” it stars actors from both Malaysia and Singapore. Ah Niu plays a grounded convenience store owner, Ko Chi-tin, whose business and marriage are both affected by the epidemic. As the Lunar New Year approaches, he and his wife, who is in the process of divorce, take their children and respective parents for a mountain holiday, leading to the revelation of their divorce case. A major quarrel ensues, and his mother (played by Xiang Yun) falls into a coma while trying to save her son from a near-accident.
