(Singapore, 9th) Two new trains for the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rail Transit (LRT) system are currently undergoing the final phase of testing and are expected to officially commence service in the third quarter of this year.
The Land Transport Authority of Singapore posted on Facebook on Friday (May 9) that these two-carriage trains arrived in Singapore last November and were transported from the port to the Sengkang Depot in December. Recently, they have been handed over to public transport operator SBS Transit to carry out the final testing phase.
The new train design focuses more on passenger comfort, including the use of LED lighting, additional seating, and further optimization of the air conditioning system to enhance the overall travel experience.
The Land Transport Authority also revealed that the other 23 new trains will arrive in Singapore in succession and will gradually be put into operation after completing testing.
To increase passenger capacity, the Land Transport Authority announced in 2021 the addition of 17 two-carriage trains for the Sengkang-Punggol LRT system, with an additional order of 8 trains in 2023, bringing the total to 25 trains at a cost of approximately 87 million SGD. According to information released last year, this batch of trains will arrive in phases from 2024 to 2027, and in the second half of 2027.
