Jay Chou (also known as Jay) was recently implicated in a high-profile dispute involving his magician friend Cai Weize, with both parties entangled in a financial conflict worth over a hundred million NTD. Aside from publicly seeking Cai, Jay has also unfollowed him, signifying a possible falling out. On the night of the 18th, Jay mentioned yet another major concern, this time involving Western pop queen Taylor Swift.
In his Instagram stories, Jay wrote, “Is anyone more troubled than I am about this—getting the same inspiration as someone else?” It turns out, his frustration stems from unintentionally sharing the same inspiration with Taylor Swift’s album lead track “The Fate of Ophelia” from “The Life of a Showgirl.” Jay posted a clip from the music video of his yet-to-be-released song and wrote: “Sometimes, you finish filming the MV early on, but you have to wait until the rest of the album tracks are recorded to release everything together. But then, unexpectedly, another artist with the same inspiration, also paying tribute to the same famous painting, releases theirs first. It’s really quite a headache! What do you all think—should I still wait until the album’s done, or go ahead and release the single now?” Many fans encouraged him to just release the single first, since the MV is already ready.
The overlapping inspiration Jay refers to is mainly about Taylor Swift’s new song and his own yet-to-be-released song both coincidentally paying tribute to the same world-famous painting, “Ophelia” by British artist John Everett Millais.
