Transforming Borneo into a Global Player in Climate Change Response and Promoting Regional Cooperation for Green Economic Development

(Kuching, 29th) Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that the business sectors of Sabah, Sarawak, Kalimantan, and Brunei must strengthen strategic cooperation to promote Borneo as a key global participant in the response to climate change.

He pointed out that Borneo possesses abundant natural resources and vast tropical rainforests, giving it a strategic advantage as an important region for carbon sequestration.

He said that Borneo also has extensive offshore areas, making it very suitable for developing Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies, further consolidating its status as a regional hub for the green economy.

"Seven months ago, I was invited by the Indonesian industry and business community to deliver a keynote speech in Jakarta. At that time, I shared a new economic framework driven by climate change."

"I suggested that all parties engage in cooperation, at least within the Borneo region, and establish a collaborative mechanism among Sabah, Sarawak, Kalimantan, and Brunei." He made these remarks last night in a speech at the 17th Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and Kadazan Dusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Joint Gawai-Kaamatan Harvest Festival celebration held at the UNIFOR Integrated Centre in Kuching.

He further pointed out that Borneo is the world's third-largest island, with an area of about 748,168 square kilometers.

"Borneo is home to the world's oldest tropical rainforests. From a carbon sequestration perspective, this is a highly promising region, and its offshore areas are also very suitable for developing CCUS technologies."

He stated that if the Kalimantan business community in Indonesia can cooperate with the DCCI and KCCI, Borneo will be able to play an even more important role in global climate governance.

In discussing regional energy cooperation, Abang Johari pointed out that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar had asked him to provide input on the 'ASEAN Grid'.

He stated that ASEAN currently has yet to establish a clear unified framework to promote regional power grid cooperation, so Sarawak is currently engaging in bilateral cooperation to achieve cross-border energy connectivity with neighboring countries.

"We have shared electricity supply with Sabah and Kalimantan. In fact, Kalimantan has now requested an additional 300 MW of power, and Sarawak has been supplying power to them for the past five years."

"In the future, once the Sabah-Sarawak main power grid is extended to Sipitang, we may connect the grid to Brunei, forming a cross-border bilateral interconnected network, and ultimately developing into a unified power grid covering the entire ASEAN region," he emphasized.
