A spokesperson for Bergamo Airport in northern Italy told AFP that a man died at the airport on the 8th after being sucked into the engine of a plane preparing for takeoff.
According to a spokesperson for airport management company SACBO, the victim was "neither a passenger nor an airport employee." He had forcibly broken into the runway and was being chased by airport security personnel, but they were unsuccessful.
Italy's Corriere della Sera reported that the man, in his 30s, stormed into the airport, then used an emergency exit to rush onto the runway, and then ran toward a plane preparing to take off.
Earlier that day, Spanish airline Volotea had posted on social media that its flight from Bergamo to Asturias, Spain, had experienced an incident at 10:35 a.m. (4:35 p.m. Malaysia time).
"A person who was not on board and had no connection with the company was seriously injured. All 154 passengers and 6 crew members are safe."
"We are doing everything possible to provide psychological support to the affected passengers and crew members, and are working closely with the Italian authorities."
According to SACBO, after the incident, Bergamo Airport—the third busiest in Italy—suspended flights and resumed operations at noon.
