Qu Zhongheng Called Out as 'Disgraced Celebrity'; Beijing Promotional Event Abruptly Halted

Taiwanese stage play director Stan Lai has worked in the industry for over 40 years, creating countless renowned stage works and striving to bring his productions to the Chinese market. Recently, Lai was promoting his play Treasure Island Village (Baodao Yicun) in Beijing. Unexpectedly, during the event, an audience member suddenly brought up Qu Zhongheng’s past drug use, creating an awkward scene. Not only was the event abruptly interrupted, but footage of the incident sparked heated discussion online.

Lai, along with cast members Qu Zhongheng, Na Weixun, Wen Zhang, and Si Wen, held a promotional event for Treasure Island Village in Beijing on the 13th. During the audience Q&A, one participant asked Lai: “CCTV once reported Qu Zhongheng’s drug use. As the director, are you pretending not to know, or are you going against the law?” The question directly referenced Qu Zhongheng’s involvement in a marijuana case, labeling him as a “disgraced celebrity,” and questioned why he could still appear on stage.

Faced with the question, Qu Zhongheng looked embarrassed, while Wen Zhang immediately lowered his head, avoiding eye contact. After a brief silence, Lai responded, “I think there’s nothing for us to discuss about this question; um, thank you.” As a result, the event was abruptly cut short. As everyone was leaving, Qu Zhongheng kept his head down without responding, and Lai angrily pointed at the questioning audience member. Wen Zhang gently patted Lai on the back to console him, hoping Lai and Qu’s mood wouldn’t be affected.

It is understood that in 2006, Qu Zhongheng and Tuo Zongkang were involved in a marijuana case. Initially, both insisted they had not used drugs and underwent police urine and hair follicle tests. However, at a later press conference, they admitted their actions and entered a rehab facility for 50 days. Both also suspended hosting the show Mr. Con & Mr. Csi (Guoguang Bangbangmang). Now that Qu Zhongheng’s drug incident has resurfaced, some netizens believe the audience member was not wrong—Qu indeed made mistakes. However, others support Qu, praising his performance in the stage play.
