(Miri, 24th) Miri Mayor YB Adam Yii stated that the heavy rain on the 21st of this month caused rapid water accumulation in many low-lying areas due to factors such as sudden heavy rainfall.
During a press conference following the Miri City Council's regular monthly meeting,Adam Yii pointed out that aside from drainage system issues, sudden heavy rainfall and high tide were also factors contributing to the rapid accumulation of water.
"According to data collected from various rainfall stations in Miri, the rainfall intensity exceeded 100mm that day, which falls into the category of very heavy rainfall (> 60mm)."
He mentioned that, in today's meeting, he once again emphasized that the council must ensure all drains are not blocked.
"The Miri City Council has collaborated with agencies such as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage and the Public Works Department to arrange routine inspections of the drainage system before and during the rainy season. This includes identifying areas prone to blockages and ensuring regular cleaning, especially in areas susceptible to water hazards.
Adam Yii also suggested that residents in frequently affected areas build thresholds at their doorways to temporarily prevent water from entering their homes, as the accumulated water usually recedes quickly.
