【Hui Siu Hung Passes Away from Cancer】A Deep Ties with Malaysia: "People Here Are So Polite"

Over the years, Hui Siu Hung has formed a deep bond with Malaysia. Ever since settling in Singapore with his family, Hui Siu Hung would visit Malaysia almost every year—whether for travel, visiting friends, attending events, or filming movies and TV shows, he has left many footprints here.

When interviewed about his impressions of Malaysia, Hui Siu Hung laughed and said that people here are "really too polite". Whether in a hotel or a tea restaurant, the staff would keep bowing. He joked, "I don't even know if it's truly heartfelt, but it really feels comfortable and friendly. This is definitely a good habit."

In recent years, many Hong Kong film and television crews have chosen to shoot in Malaysia. At the beginning of 2023, the suspense film "The Protector's War", produced by Louis Koo, was shot in Penang. Hui Siu Hung, together with Philip Keung, Raymond Wong Ho-Yin, Samantha Ko, and others, participated in the film. During filming, he even visited the Hui Clan Hall in Penang for an ancestral ceremony. Wearing casual attire and showing none of the airs of a celebrity, he warmly posed for photos with clan members, creating a heartwarming scene.

In July of the same year, the TV drama "Modern Dynasty: The Inheritors", featuring top actors like Charmaine Sheh, Raymond Lam, Kenneth Lo, Gallen Lo, and Hui Siu Hung, shot for two months in Malaysia. Hui Siu Hung joked that he accepted the role in the drama because of the persistent invitation from his goddaughter Charmaine Sheh: "Ah Sheh called and said, 'Dad, you’re playing my father again this time!' I hadn't agreed to the role yet, but I accepted it because of her." The two also held a god-parent ceremony on set, making their bond as close as that of a real father and daughter.

Earlier this year, Hui Siu Hung collaborated with local actor Yuan Teng in MR.DIY's Chinese New Year short film "Love Beyond the Court", where they played a father and son at odds in court over family matters. Their deeply emotional performances highlighted themes of love and forgiveness, and a dramatic confrontation between them received high praise from the audience.

Be it on-screen characters or off-screen interactions, Hui Siu Hung always wins the love of Malaysian viewers with his approachable, sincere, and humorous demeanor. He laughed and said, "Every time I come to Malaysia, I always feel as comfortable as if I’m coming home."
