Beloved Christmas Street Hit by Cable Theft, Striving to Restore Lights Before Christmas

(Kuching, 23rd) The main power cable used for the Christmas street trees at La Promenade's Hock Seng Lee (HSL) was stolen late Monday night (December 22), causing a power outage and affecting the festive decorations in the area.
HSL announced on social media today that its security personnel discovered the outage around midnight, and subsequently confirmed that the main power line for the Christmas installations had been deliberately cut and stolen.
“HSL, with great disappointment and helplessness, must inform the public that all the main electrical cables to the Christmas street trees were cut and stolen by thieves last night. Our security discovered the outage at midnight.” HSL stated.
HSL added that its construction and events teams are working around the clock to restore the lights as quickly as possible, hoping to have them back up before December 25.
These lighting decorations are part of HSL's annual La Promenade Christmas Street event, which opens with a lighting ceremony and has become one of the area's most beloved year-end traditions.
This tradition began in 2021, and since then the event has grown in scale and creativity each year.
