Among the 224,403 gambling contents removed from various online platforms, more than 93% came from Facebook, making it a haven for gambling advertisements.

Communications Minister Fahmi stated at the Dewan Rakyat's question and answer session today (13th) that from 2022 to February 1st this year, a total of 209,006 gambling-related items were taken down.

“The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission takes proactive monitoring measures to ensure that our online environment is not polluted by illegal content, including online gambling content.”

He pointed out that during the same period, the government, in cooperation with internet service providers, blocked 5,026 gambling websites.

He said that under the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998, the commission is committed to working with the Royal Malaysia Police to help remove social media content, block related websites, and provide technical support to expedite the investigation process of online gambling crimes.

Fahmi was responding to a question from Azahari, a member of parliament from the National Alliance representing Silam.

He stated that to ensure a safer and more sustainable online ecosystem, the commission has stipulated that starting from January 1st, 2025, all social media and internet communication services with at least 8 million registered users in Malaysia must apply for a license.

He pointed out that this measure is aimed at ensuring all registered social media and communication service providers comply with the relevant provisions of the Communications and Multimedia Act, and follow the code of conduct (best practices) issued by the commission.

He added that this further enhances the accountability of providing online content and interactions for users.
